Is there proof from the Book or the Sunnah or action of the Prophet
(peace and blessing upon him) for shaking hands when one enters upon
those that are sitting? May Allah reward you with good.


I don’t know anything of this kind from the Sunnah, for this reason it
is not appropriate for you to do so. Some people when they enter a
gathering they begin with the handshake from the first person to the
last person and this is not legislated from what I know, and shaking
hands is only for when meeting one another, as for when entering the
gathering, then it is not from the manhaj of the Messenger (peace and
blessing upon him or his companions) that they would do that. The
Messenger (peace and blessing upon him would come and sit at the end
of the majlis (sitting room) and we never heard also that if he sat at
the end of the majlis that they would stand up and shake his hand, so
shaking hands in this manner is not legislated. I asked about this to
those who we rely upon from our Shaykhs, so they said we do not know
for this an origin in the sunnah…

Listen and obey

Famous statement of Imaam Malik Ibn Anas rahimahullaah who said:

“من زعم أن في الإسلام بدعة حسنة فقد زعم أن محمدا خان رسالته”

Whoever believes that there is in Islaam good innovation (bid’ah hasanah) he has believed that Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) has not fulfilled his mission/message.

It is reported from Al-’Abbâs b. Al-Walîd that ‘Uqbah said:

I was once with Arta’ah b. Al-Mundhir when one of the people in the gathering said, “What do you say about a man who sits with the followers of the Sunnah and mixes with them, but when the followers of Bid’ah are mentioned he says, ‘Spare us from mentioning them, do not talk about them?’” Arta’ah said, “He is one of them, do not let him confuse you about his condition.” I felt this was strange, so I went to Al-Awzâ’î – and he used to clarify these matters when they came to him. He said, “Arta’ah is right, the matter is as he said; this person forbids talking about [Ahl Al-Bid’ah], so how can [people] be on guard against them if they are not exposed?”

Al-Layth bin Sa’d (d. 175H) said: “If I saw a person of desires (i.e. innovations) walking upon the water I would not accept from him.” So Imaam as-Shaafi’ee then said: “”He (al-Layth) has fallen short. If I saw him walking in the air I would not accept from him.”

Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan was asked: “Many people say that those who refute the people of innovation are the cause of separation.”

Shaykh al-Fawzan answered: “Yes, separation between the truth and the falsehood; this is correct. We make a distinction between truth and the falsehood and (also between) the people of truth and the people of falsehood. We are going to refute (the people of falsehood), and the Scholars refuted (the people of falsehood). This is not for the purpose of causing division; this is to gather the people upon the truth, because with people remaining upon misguidance and upon the speech of falsehood, then this causes division between the Muslims. As for clarifying the truth for the people, so they can gather upon it, then this is the da’wah towards unity, not the da’wah towards separation. The da’wah towards separation is when it is said, ‘The people of falsehood are not to be refuted.’ This is the da’wah to division if they only gave thought.”

In the Name of Allaah, Ar-Rahmaan, Ar-Raheem…

Nowadays, it is common to see some of the youth, impressed by themselves and what they perceive to have gathered of knowledge, to overrate themselves and believe that they can “bring the people of innovation close” by working with them or cooperating with them. They are heedless, not realising that they will be flattered with kindness, wealth and other forms of emotional blackmail. One of the major scholars of our time, may Allaah preserve him, comments on such a (innovated) notion in the name of ‘cooperation and rectification’:

Shaykh Rabee Ibn Hadi al-Madkhali was asked, “When one of the brothers is advised not to walk with the people of innovation or sit with them, he responds, ‘I am one who establishes principles for them?”

The Shaykh answered, “If you were one who established principles, you would not have kept company with them, if you were one who established principles and knew the methodology of the Salaf and knew the dangers you were exposing yourself to, and knew those who have fallen victim from the likes of you, those who are deluded like you, by Allah, if you were as you said, you would not have walked with the people of innovation.

And many walk with the people of innovation with the argument that they are benefitting them! ‘O my brother – they have not benefitted from the Scholars, so how will they be benefitted from you?!! They reject the statements of Ibn Baz (d.1420H) and the statements of al-Albani (d.1420H), al- ‘Uthaymin (d.1421H) and others from the Imams of Islam and will take from you?!! This is delusion, and ninety-nine out of a hundred times, you will end up from their followers.”1
