Hassan Al-Basree:

“Those who were before you used to often consider the nearness of death. One of them would often take water for purity, fulfill the call of nature and perform ablution, fearing that Allaah’s Command (death) might come to him while he is not in a state of purity.”

Al-Hasan al-Basree rahimahullaah said :

The true reality of good character is: Doing good to others, withholding from harming, and having a cheerful face;

and al-Qaadee `Iyaad said:

It is to associate with the people in a beautiful manner, to have a cheerful face, to show love for them, to show compassion for them, to tolerate the harm they cause, to be forbearing with them, to have patience upon disagreeable things, to abandon having pride or being arrogant towards them; and to avoid harshness, anger, and taking them to account.

Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi was-Salam) observed Saum (fasting) on the day of ‘Ashura’ and commanded us to fast on this day.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi was-Salam) was asked about observing As-Saum (the fast) on the tenth day of Muharram, and he replied, “It is an expiation for the sins of the preceding year.”

Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi was-Salam) said, “If I remain alive till the next year, I shall also observe fast on the ninth of Muharram.”

A man came to Maymoon b. Mahraan – Allaah be pleased with him – to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Maymoon said, “I do not approve of her for you.” The man asked, “Why?” He replied, “Because she loves jewelry and garments.” To this the man said, “Well I have as much of those as she desires.” Maymoon said, “Now I don’t approve of you for her.”
